Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson

Updated: Dec 7, 2022

Since the Fate of the Furious' production (Fast 8 2017), we heard about the disagreements existing between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, it’s clear that the misunderstandings between these two great Hollywood stars cannot reach a good conclusion when Dwayne Johnson rejected the offer extended by Vin Diesel to return as Agent Luke Hobb to the latest installment of his saga.

Dwayne Johnson is on promotion of his Black Adam film and I come across an article published by SCREENRANT, that as a Fast and Furious' and as a Vin Diesel's fan made me uncomfortable.

How The Rock Saved Fast & Furious

While Fast & Furious (2009) gave the franchise hopes for a new beginning thanks to the returns of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker to the roles of Dom Toretto and Brian O’Conner, respectively, Fast and Furious was still far from being the box office juggernaut it is today. That changed once Fast Five expanded the scope and the scale of the saga with Fast and Furious’ first nine-figure budget film, which was translated into a larger set of characters and bigger action pieces. The Rock’s rising star power added to that change in tone of the Fast and Furious movies led to a completely different franchise, one in which hand-to-hand combats and other incredible action stunts were now more important than the cars and the street races. Fast and Furious’ worldwide box office growth coincided with the arrival of The Rock, which is no coincidence given how much more ambitious the movies became.

Dwayne Johnson is one of the reasons why Fast and Furious was not afraid of pushing the saga to be bigger and bolder, which can now happen with the DCEU. Following Justice Leagues failure, the DCEU has struggled with the apparent lack of a bigger plan, which led to some of the franchise’s most important characters like Superman and Batman currently being in limbo. Black Adam’s success can inspire the DCEU to go back to even-level movies instead of playing safe, a change that would be essential for The Rock’s “change in the hierarchy of power” teases to be paid off.

Excuse me! I greatly admire Mr. Dwayne Johnson’s film career, and his contribution to the Fast and Furious success as an actor interpreting his roll to perfection, and I also cleary can see Mr. De Souza admiration to Dwayne Johnson's career but I totally disagreed when someone is using his popularity to take advantage from another professional's work. Dwayne Johnson was added to Fast Five to interpreter a roll that was already set and written with Academy Award Winner Tommy Lee Jones in mind.

While developing Fast Five, Universal Studios deliberately departed from the street racing theme prevalent in previous films in the series, to transform the franchise into a heist action series involving cars. By doing so, they were open to attract wider audiences. Fast Five is considered the transitional film in the series, featuring only one car race and giving more attention to action set pieces such as brawls, gun fights, and the central heist, and also as usual to each Fast and Furious installment added new characters to the plot.

Perhab Mr. Marcelo de Souza Silverio Leite forgot his previous article about Fast Five called, "Dom and Hobb" published also at SCREENRANT where Vin Diesel clear explained how Luke Hobb's character was handed to Dwayne Johnson:

"During a live Facebook Q&A session (via USA Today, Vin Diesel explained that the role of Hobbs was written with Academy Award winning actor Tommy Lee Jones in mind. But prior to the production of Fast Five, a Facebook fan named Jan Kelly suggested the idea of Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson working side by side in a movie, and as such the role of Hobbs received a few minor tweaks and found itself in the capable hands of The Rock".

After this being said, it is clear that Dwayne Johnson didn't saved the Fast and Furious saga becoming and advisor to grow up the franchise as Mr. Marcelo de Souza Silverio Leite is claiming in his article, otherwise thanks to Dwayne Johnson's collaboration with the saga he moved on to his actual celebrity stardom status. By the way, if "DCEU has struggled with the apparent lack of a bigger plan (as Mr. De Souza is mentioning in his article)", DCEU should call Vin Diesel as adviser to repeat the Fast and Furious longevity and success with their films' franchise.

Heading to Fast X 's last news it is confirmed that Luis Da Silva Jr. who played 'Diogo' in Fast Five the fifth installment in Fast and Furious franchise will be back in Fast X to appear in the new scenes set in Brazil that the production filmed last September. The actor filmed his scenes at the Warner Bros. Pictures studio in London, UK, where the cast did most of the recording. Everything indicates that 'Diogo' will be part of the flashback set in Rio de Janeiro, following the events of "Fast Five" with Dominic and his team looking for 'fast cars' to finish the job in Rio. It's a golden opportunity for Universal Pictures to include the deleted footage of the car title race (not included in the 2011 film) between Dom and Diogo. @FuriososMx
